As I read the Odysseus I found it interesting as how the text was written first and foremost as most of the literature we read was told as stories and this one was written as a song.I can visually see this story being told in a tavern in which one had come home from a long day and needed something to keep their mind distracted or entertained.I saw this in the first stanza in the story in which they say “o friends o ever partners of my woes” it seems to get the people to feel invested in this story as its sung.I was also wondering as to why they were using quotations within stanza 2,3,4,5,6 but I found it very interesting that they wouldnt close the quotation until stanza 6.I was thinking when they wouldnt finish a quotation in which i can see it as a pause in which the speaker catches their breath and tries to rile their audience and try to get banter from them.Stanza six could be seen as a way for the speaker to finish the story by getting the audience to finish the story as if they expect the audience to already know of the story.within the text I found evidence in which they would use exclamation points every so often in order to emphasize a revelation or a action.while the story itself I didnt feel was impactful it was the use of their description and world building that had me going through the story in which “flowery meads the sportive sirens play” not only did I find this as the only description I needed of the mermaids of the story It had me thinking how they defined the feminity of mermaids indirectly in which they described the mermaids to be laying in a beautiful field of flowers.

Explanations of origin
I remember from class that we discussed that some mermaids that we read in stories may not seem like mermaids at first glance but are such as the story of Odysseus where he was attacked by sirens which flew but held a figuire closer to that of a mermaid. In this case the story of kaliya and the serpent are similar to that in which while the serpent isnt the mermaid itself but what the outcome of the story allows for the creation of mermaid.I had also found it interesting how throughout the story they focused primarly on the use of fire as a description.I also had found it interesting as the use of the word fire which primarly is used as a method of cleasing and rebirth in many other stories. In the story when they talk about the serpent they describe the flailing of the snake when confronted by krsna as “they burst at once into flame smitten by the wind and carried by water burning by that snakes evil fiery poison”. I felt that this quote was important because during that time I believe that there may have been fires in the area and they were being carried across the area by the wind in which they were only put out by the raining season. After the snake was defeated the snakes wife had begged for mercy, but what I had found interesting was the description of the wifes. In the story they described the snakes wifes as “adorned with fetching necklaces, who were beautiful with jangling necklaces” which I felt is a description of a mermaid by their sexuality and how they were described attractive which is usually a main characteristic of a mermaid. It was also interesting as they had adorned the mermaids with man made objects like necklaces and jewlery Which I only know of one thing to use jewelry which is us humans.I believe that the reason why they had to make clear that they were adorned with jewelry is in order for them to be closer to humans and make us the reader have pity not only for the snake but the wives as well. The end of the story was also interesting because the snake spoke and stated that he “was defeated and asked for mercy” which was given due to him not doing anything on purpose and was then cast to the ocean from the river with his ancestors and wives.I found this interesting as well for the reason that when we think of the location of mermaids we think oceans or by the beach which is where they were cast to after being defeated. It then further deepens the story by leaving the story open ended by stating that they were not killed but the snake, wives, and children presumably still alive continuing their lineage within the ocean.
Hey pick up the phone…Wassssupp It your boi..Richard Vieyra
Hi everybody My name is Richard Vieyra .Im currently within my final year at San Diego State and am so excited to finally be so close to graduating.Ive lived In San Diego my whole life and I dont think I would change it for the world.Im currently majoring in English comparative literature and hope to have a impact within not only the world but my community.some of the big hobbies I have right now is trading card games which I started getting Heavily addicted to during the pandemic like almost everybody else.I think the only time I travel out of San Diego is to attend major events for the trading card games I like.I recently went to Anaheim to attend a major qualifying event just to cheer my friends on.Honestly I have a blast talking, trading, playing, and competing with people from all over the world. Some of my favorite card games are pokemon and yugioh, but I personally prefer playing yugioh since that is the one I grew up with primarly.I had always loved watching the cartoon growing up and saw it as just cheesy but cool such as when they introduced in the cartoon the concept of playing trading card games on motorcycles.Honestly I hope to find someone I can nerd out about this in this class since this niche hobby has become so mainstream.I will say that some of the main questions people have when I talk about this hobbie are if im good at the game?and I would say Im not dogwater at the game but decent enough to get 3rd or 4th at our local tournaments. The second question I get asked is whats the most expensive card I have within my collection and that would be the paldean fates bubble mew which is at about $400 ,but only have it because I got a really great deal from my friends who like to collect the cards as well.hope Everybody has a good semester this year and hope that we can all learn about the environment through the analysis of mermaids within this class and hope to hear from many of you soon on my blog post hopefully sooner rather than later.
