The Real Little Mermaid without a name

In the chapter “The little Mermaid” where the tale is about a mermaid with no name with a story and that being a mermaid is difficult because people know that you are different and people don’t really approve of you as being somebody. Also for wanting to escape her home life and having the desires of having good relationships with her sisters as well. In this version of the Little Mermaid has shown themes of the true nature of these Mermaids.

In Both versions the story contains same desire to escape from the ocean and the consistency are described as being alien to everyone else who is considered to be normal and nothing is wrong with them. Each of the mermaids have a different way of seeing things of why they are for example, The eldest princess has gotten to the age of fifteen to see the surface and what it led to is that wanting them to see what is on top of the ocean surface and it everything the eldest princess dreamed of. While the others princess have similar reactions to this except for one which was the fourth princesses wanted to remain into the deep ocean. In modern versions the portrayal of this particular scene was the that it only one of those princess that was depicted to the Little mermaid Disney movie. While the modern Mermaid movies was only light hearted story about a Mermaid to wanting to live outside of the ocean and in Hans Christien Anderson’s version of the story is much more in touch with the depictions of what people thought of Mermaids and more of inside view what it is really like for living a life of a Mermaid.

The Beginning of the loving Undine Marriage

From reading the passage of “The day after the wedding from Undine” one the book ” The Penguin Book of Mermaids”.In this passage where both perspectives of a married couple are told and the emotions that come with it. “I think, however, nevertheless, that you will keep me with you; I love so heartily” (104). The romance in this marriage is unpredictable journey when it starts. As the passage continues into the depths of Huldbrand and Undine. It seems how their marriage was mostly filled with Huldbrand thoughts of his partner. It is a something that lots of this passage mainly talks about how does the feelings of a relationship is wild and the path is long and winding. “Huldbrand. full as he was of strange fear and emotions, knew not what to reply” (104). It implies that Huldbrand is an overly affectionate man to his spouse and it is affecting her with lots tension throughout the passage and the example that shows this more from undine is that “No, there, opposite to me! I will read my sentence in your eyes, before your lips speak; now, listen attentively to what I will relate to you” (104). It seems like Undine is saying that she is not feeling as enthusiastic as her husband Huldbrand who is a persuasive and light hearted man.

For my thoughts on the passage is that their is something about this couple is that there is a thing about how people in real life can be out of touch of their behavior and to prove that in one example “Thus my father, who is a powerful water-prince in the Mediterranean Sea, desired that his only daughter should become possessed of a soul, even though she must then endure man sufferings of those thus endowed” (105). By this interpretation it means that there is two different meanings of what a marriage means for the recently married newlyweds on their honeymoon. Another undine interpretation of her perspective of marriage is “I am now passed of a soul, and my soul thanks you, my inexpressibly beloved one, and it will ever thank you, if you do not make my whole life miserable” (105) and (106).

The legend of Melusina the reflection of Raymond

In the passage of the legend of Melusiana where love is something to be earned is the running theme of this passage. it critiques to many relationships people have today. “Raymond’s cousin had excited him to jealousy and to secret concealment, by malicious suggestions of the purport of the countess”. The interpretation from this quote is that love is something that people get all the time but others try to take that love away from them and take advantage of it. In the passage Raymond received love from Melusina and got married. I see this type of things happen in real life whenever it’s at school home or just any where in fact. being single and seeing relationships in. person and online seem either pleasant on the outside but possible hideous on the inside. People chase after things that they don’t have and pursue it even if it’s the wrong thing to do. “Melusina former anxiety was now verified, and the evil that lain so long in ambush and now fearfully sprung on him and her”. It seems that evil caught up with both of them and had a horrible fate which resulted in their death. Having too much of one thing can lead to most losses. It shows in our lives money can solve lots of problems but has a flaw in itself and when other human moral values are needed most it rises in situations that tend to be when inequality is seen in the public eye and causing problems.

The Sirens and the Odysseus

In the book “The Penguin book of Mermaids” the poem and the chapter “Odysseus and the Sirens” and what really stood out to me is that in the passage of “Hear and obey; if freedom I demand,”(10). In this part of the poem it means that there is a part of society that often tells people what to do and controls behind closed doors. It represents how does a siren would play a sound that would be dangerous to play out to the world. What connects this to our world is the quote “Oh stay, O pride of Greece! Ulysses, stay!” (10). It would mean having pride in ourselves no matter what people tell us who we really are. Pride has gotten pretty far in a sense of identity and it has said points that proves why persistence has gone through further and further along on to going out into the sea. This relates to our world because it has to do something with how people take there pride too far like for example when people express themselves and people judge the for something that seems wrong with them but it can turn into isolation and revenge. The relevancy everywhere I go and it is to show the world isn’t really a safe place to express our true selves especially online.

A Modern day Reflection of the Ocean

In the passage “Mermaids among us today” the quote “The reimagined figure of the mermaid resonates for many today as fluid feminine self possession or playful queerness”. What it implies is that how I see views on people who have that questioning their identity. We do have that question in the back of our mind but where I see it as a interpretation of modern day feminism and it has an impact on our culture. I also see it as a ignorance and it is not society fault for not understanding of the negative side of mermaid culture and Ariel is the face of what Mermaids are that is just a cover of what is hidden.

From pages xxi to xxii the quote ” In the late twentieth century, riding the second wave of Western Feminism, Andersen’s Little Mermaid became Disney Ariel, and her voice and songs memorably asserted her double betweenness as an adolescent mermaid”. It tells me that their way of telling that identity is more than just one image that is a famous Icon such as Ariel. Another series that took off as mermaid is that the latest Disney movie Luca where it is about how mermaids are not accepted and not viewed positively by having a look of disgusted. It is being done by showing how representation is not just a musical about feminine ideal that people look up to and wanting to become a mermaid even though it has been showed to be a ideal creature.

This is relevant because in our modern culture our identities have lately been shifting around and people aren’t really sure what is real and what is not. The meaning of this is that it has been a growing trend to defy the norm of being normal to some degree. Mermaids controversy has added quite a lot of layers of knowing how they are depicted. Illusions has been quite taken as a form of dreaming to be a fictional character who may or may not have existed. There has been stories been told about mermaids show people have grown to only known or never known about the truth behind mermaids themselves.

Chapter 1 introduction to Mermaids and humans

In this chapter where it introduces how does society works with people who are Mermaids and Humans have differences and what they about this is usually through the Human perspective is only one people pay attention to. I personally didn’t really know how seperate they are as mythical creatures. The fact that hybridity is the balance between both mythological and scientific camps.
